At the season finale of the Prototype Cup Europe, the German Motor Sports Team narrowly missed out on the title.
The season finale at Spa-Francorchamps is now behind the Prototype Cup Europe competitors. With the support of GEBHARDT Motorsport, the GMS Team fielded two Ligier JS P325. Valentino Catalano travelled to the Ardennes as championship leader and was supported by Danny Soufi. Oscar Tunjo and Jake Williamson drove the second LMP3 car.
Catalano went into the final race weekend with a four-point lead. In the first race, the highly talented German and his team-mate finished fourth, meaning he lost the championship lead to his title rival, who came second. In the decisive final race of the season, Catalano and Soufi finished second, but missed out on victory by 3.593 seconds; the win went to Maxim Dirickx, who consequently claimed the title.
Oscar Tunjo and Jake Williamson finished seventh in both races in the German Motor Sports Team’s second Ligier. Tunjo’s comeback was particularly fascinating in the second race. Starting from tenth on the grid, the Colombian fought his way up to fourth place and even set the fastest lap of the race. Williamson then lost a few positions in the second half of the race.
“Of course, it’s incredibly frustrating to miss out on the title after arriving at the final with Valentino leading the championship. Unfortunately, this has now happened to us for the second time this year. For us, however, it’s an incentive to come back stronger next year and hopefully clinch the title then,” said Fritz Gebhardt. “Congratulations to Maxim Dirickx on winning the title; he took his first steps in LMP3 racing with GEBHARDT Motorsport.”
Straight from the event at Spa-Francorchamps, GEBHARDT Motorsport travelled to the Neuffen Hill Climb, where the team carried out demonstration runs in the hill climb with three LMP3 cars and a legendary Porsche 962 in front of 15,000 enthusiastic spectators.
